European Commission Approves Naspers’ Acquisition of Just Eat Takeaway

The European Commission has greenlit the acquisition of food delivery giant Just Eat Takeaway by South Africa’s multi-billion-euro tech group Naspers, reports 24brussels.

Just Eat Takeaway, the second-largest online food delivery service in Europe after Delivery Hero, operates from its headquarters in the Netherlands. The company utilizes orange-clad couriers across various brands, including Just Eat, Takeaway, Lieferando, and Thuisbezorgd.

On Monday, the Commission approved Naspers’ acquisition through its investment division, Prosus, but mandated a “significant reduction” in its stake in Berlin-based Delivery Hero. Currently, Naspers holds a 27.4 percent share in Delivery Hero, making it the largest shareholder.

The EU’s regulatory body emphasized that this measure aims to maintain independence and competition between the two firms.

Naspers has expressed ambitions to establish “a European food delivery champion” utilizing artificial intelligence (AI) to enhance service delivery.
