Flemish Government Exempts Minor Renovation Works from Environmental Permits

The Flemish government has announced the exemption of various minor renovation works from environmental permit requirements, as stated by Flemish Minister of the Environment Jo Brouns on Friday, reports 24brussels.

The new exemptions will apply to façade renovations that do not involve extensions, internal works that do not jeopardize structural integrity, the installation of plug-in solar panels, small constructions on agricultural land, the creation of wadis, small water purification systems, and small-scale fermentation plants.

Moreover, certain activities that previously necessitated notification but not a permit will no longer require reporting.

Municipal authorities will experience new constraints regarding additional permits. Exceptions will be permitted solely for activities involving tree felling, the removal of woody vegetation with historical significance, or any work on protected or valuable heritage sites.

This legislative change will be submitted to advisory councils for review. Brouns expressed his hope to implement these alterations by the end of the year.
