Flemish Minister Launches Campaign Against Drink Spiking Amid Growing Concerns
Flemish Minister of Justice Zuhal Demir has initiated a campaign targeting the issue of drink spiking, a method where narcotics are covertly added to beverages, commonly with the intent of facilitating sexual assault. This initiative arises amidst escalating concerns following a significant case in Kortrijk, where numerous alleged victims have recently come forward., reports 24brussels.
“As a society, we really cannot tolerate this kind of criminal behaviour. Everyone should be able to enjoy themselves carefree on sultry summer evenings,” Demir stated on Friday during the campaign’s launch. The accompanying video emphasizes the severe nature of spiking, equating it to rape, and is designed to both confront offenders and encourage bystanders to take action. It also outlines available helplines and support resources for victims.
Demir expressed her hope that the awareness generated by the campaign would deter potential offenders and encourage witnesses to intervene, emphasizing that such actions can significantly impact outcomes. The campaign seeks to transform the discourse around spiking from one of victim-blaming to holding perpetrators accountable and fostering a sense of collective responsibility.
Escalating Investigation in Kortrijk
This initiative comes at a critical time, as the public prosecutor in Kortrijk has identified at least 52 potential victims since the issue first emerged in November. Many of these incidents occurred within the nightlife sector, with victims reporting incidents of drugging while visiting local cafés.
On Thursday, the indictment chamber reaffirmed that a 27-year-old former owner of café De Geverfde Vogel, a key figure in the ongoing investigation, will remain under electronic monitoring. Previously under house arrest, he was subjected to renewed custody following an appeal by the public prosecutor against his conditional release.
Another suspect, a former barman at café Patron, continues to be held in custody. The visibility and extent of the Kortrijk investigation have intensified the urgency surrounding Demir’s campaign. Although drink spiking has long posed a risk in nightlife settings, recent months have seen a notable rise in public reports, testimonies shared on social media, and documentation by law enforcement regarding the phenomenon.
