Flemish Government to Address Gaza Situation in Urgent Meeting

Flemish minister-president Matthias Diependaele (N-VA) has called an urgent meeting of the core Flemish government for Friday at 19:30 following increasing pressure from coalition partners CD&V and Vooruit to expedite discussions on the humanitarian crisis in Gaza and consider stricter measures against Israel, reports 24brussels.

This decision comes after a session of the Foreign Policy Committee in the Flemish Parliament, where both CD&V and Vooruit reiterated their demands for a firmer stance against Israel and the need to accelerate the government’s response.

The Diependaele government had originally scheduled a meeting for September 5. However, an additional committee meeting concerning Israel and Gaza is already planned for September 2, prompting calls for the Flemish government to clarify its position on Israel in advance of that gathering.

On Monday, CD&V and Vooruit presented a resolution independently of N-VA, outlining various proposed measures. This action was perceived as a strategic effort to exert pressure on their coalition partner.

Diependaele’s convening of the top leadership for an evening discussion underscores the urgency of the situation. Additionally, the core federal government is set to meet on Wednesday to further evaluate the matter.
