Giorgia Meloni’s Coalition Marks 1,000 Days in Office Amid Growing Public Discontent

ROME – Giorgia Meloni’s right-wing coalition will reach 1,000 days in office on Friday, making it one of the five longest-serving governments in Italy’s post-war history, as well as a rare example of political stability in the country., reports 24brussels.

Despite the potential to break Italy’s historical trend of coalition instability, with no government completing a full five-year term since World War II, signs of fatigue among the electorate are evident. Currently, only 34% of Italians express a positive view of the government’s performance, a decline of three percentage points compared to the previous month. Conversely, negative opinions have risen to 62%, with Deputy Prime Minister Matteo Salvini identified as the least popular cabinet minister.

Public sentiment regarding government policies reflects a divided opinion. The initiative to combat femicide enjoys the broadest support, with 38% approval overall. However, right-wing voters show a stronger preference for policies such as the abolition of the basic income scheme (51%), the introduction of stricter immigration laws (41%), and tougher regulations on protests and occupations (35%).

In contrast, the proposal for a bridge linking Sicily to the mainland has emerged as the least supported policy among the government’s initiatives.

Despite the growing discontent, Meloni’s party, Brothers of Italy, remains ahead in the polls with nearly 30%, outperforming the centre-left Democratic Party at 22% and the populist Five Star Movement at 12%.
