Italy Expands Special Economic Zone to Central Regions Amid Upcoming Elections

Italy has announced the expansion of its Special Economic Zone (SEZ) to the central regions of Umbria and Marche, a move backed by Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and viewed as a strategic initiative ahead of significant regional elections.

The Council of Ministers approved the measure, which was initially confined to southern regions, providing tax incentives and administrative facilitation for both new and existing businesses to enhance local entrepreneurship.

During an official visit to Marche on 4 August, Meloni stated that the objective of this expansion is to “give this area an extra opportunity.”

The timing of this announcement has sparked speculation, with analysts suggesting it may be a strategy to improve her party’s prospects in the regional elections scheduled for 28 and 29 September.

Despite backing from national leadership, outgoing regional president Francesco Acquaroli, representing Meloni’s Brothers of Italy party, is positioned in a competitive race. Current polls indicate a slim lead for opposition candidate Matteo Ricci from the Democratic Party.

Among the six regions set to hold elections this autumn, only Veneto appears to be a secure victory for the centre-right coalition, increasing the pressure on Meloni and her partners.
