Sweden to Establish NATO Logistics Headquarters Amid Heightened Security Concerns
Sweden will host a NATO logistics headquarters tasked with coordinating troop movements in Northern Europe, the government announced on Thursday. The establishment of this base reinforces Sweden’s commitment to NATO and enhances its security measures, reports 24brussels.
Defence Minister Pål Jonson emphasized that “NATO presence in Sweden strengthens our security and deterrence. The logistics centre assists the defence of NATO’s northern flank.”
The logistics headquarters will be based at Enkoping, northwest of Stockholm, and will maintain approximately 70 personnel during peacetime.
In a potential crisis or state of war, the base’s capacity will expand to accommodate up to 160 personnel, as stated in a government release.
The Swedish armed forces are currently preparing the site with the goal of having it operational by the end of 2027.
Jonson provided further details to public broadcaster SVT, explaining that operations at the logistics centre will involve the transport of essential supplies including fuel, ammunition, and spare parts.
“The aim is to be able to transport large amounts of equipment and personnel across Swedish territory,” he concluded.
Sweden’s decision to join NATO followed the significant shift in its military stance, ending two centuries of non-alignment in response to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, culminating in its accession as NATO’s 32nd member in March 2024.
