Slovak Prime Minister Fico Threatens to Block New EU Sanctions Against Russia

BRATISLAVA – Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico announced Thursday that he would oppose the EU’s 19th sanctions package against Russia unless the European Commission provides concrete measures to protect industry and stabilize energy prices, reports 24brussels.

During a press conference in Bratislava, Fico criticized EU climate targets and emphasized that his support for further sanctions is contingent upon addressing these industrial concerns.

Fico stated, “I would not back new sanctions against Russia unless the European Commission puts forward realistic proposals on how to reconcile our ambitious climate goals with the needs of car manufacturing not only in Slovakia but across the EU, as well as with the needs of heavy industry,” at a press conference with Costa on Thursday.

Furthermore, he indicated a willingness to reconsider certain EU climate targets, should there be sufficient political backing to do so.

Fico, who has a history of maintaining close relations with Russian President Vladimir Putin, underscored that his government’s endorsement of new sanctions will depend on the Commission’s commitment to alleviating pressures on European manufacturers and reducing energy costs.

This stance highlights the ongoing tensions within the EU as member states grapple with the balance between economic stability and a unified front against Russian aggression.

As the geopolitical landscape evolves, Fico’s position may not only influence Slovakia’s policies but could also set a precedent for other EU countries navigating their relations with Russia amidst ongoing sanctions discussions.

In related developments, European leaders are continuing to debate the implications of these sanctions on both regional industries and the broader European economy, seeking a path that aligns with the bloc’s overarching commitment to supporting Ukraine in its conflict against Russia.
