Trump and Putin Meet in Alaska, No Ceasefire Agreement Reached

The summit between US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska failed to yield a significant agreement regarding the ongoing war in Ukraine. Despite President Trump’s hopes for a ceasefire, no deal was achieved. “There is no deal until there is a deal,” he stated afterwards, as journalists were barred from asking questions, reports 24brussels.

The meeting lasted approximately two and a half hours, shorter than anticipated. Both leaders described the discussions as constructive; however, the specifics of what was communicated or accomplished remained ambiguous.

President Putin emphasized Russia’s desire to resolve the conflict in Ukraine, insisting that the underlying issues need to be addressed first. Trump remarked, “We have made really great progress,” but reiterated that no agreement had materialized.

The summit did not conclude with a ceasefire accord. En route to Alaska, Trump expressed dissatisfaction if no agreement was reached with Putin regarding the conflict by Friday.

At the end of the press conference, Putin extended an invitation for further discussions in Moscow. While Trump did not commit to a specific response, he showed interest. He mentioned plans to call NATO leaders and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky following the meeting.

With 200 journalists present, the opportunity for questions was not afforded to them. Nonetheless, Trump shared his thoughts in an interview with Fox News, acknowledging that there were “one big thing” they could not agree upon, yet suggested they were “pretty close to a deal.” He noted that Ukraine’s acceptance remains necessary, stating, “Maybe they’ll say no.” Trump urged Zelensky to “Make a deal,” indicating that the next steps include conversations with both Moscow and Kyiv.

President Trump and President Putin’s meeting in Alaska underscores the ongoing complexities and challenges in reaching a resolution concerning the conflict in Ukraine.
