Ukrainian Lawmaker Shot Dead in Lviv Amid Ongoing Russian Strikes
A Ukrainian lawmaker, Andriy Parubiy, who previously served as speaker of parliament, was shot dead on Saturday in Lviv, a crime that President Volodymyr Zelensky labeled as a “horrific murder,” reports 24brussels.
Zelensky pledged a comprehensive investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death of the 54-year-old politician, who was an influential figure during Ukraine’s pro-European movements in the early 2000s.
According to police, Parubiy “died on the spot as a result of his injuries,” while law enforcement agencies are currently pursuing the assailant. The motive behind the shooting remains unclear.
Parubiy, who held the position of parliamentary speaker from 2016 to 2019, was a prominent advocate for Ukraine’s democratic movements, including the Orange Revolution and the Maidan Revolution, both pivotal in shaping the nation’s pro-European stance.
In parallel to this tragic incident, Russian forces unleashed a wave of “massive” strikes across Ukraine overnight, further complicating peace efforts and prompting President Zelensky to renew his call for assistance from the United States and European nations.
Ukrainian emergency services reported via Telegram that attacks in the southern city of Zaporizhzhia resulted in at least one fatality and injured a minimum of 25 individuals, including three children aged between nine and 16 who were hospitalized.
Regional governor Ivan Fedorov confirmed that residential buildings sustained damage from the strikes, leaving numerous homes without gas or electricity. The Russian military acknowledged the operation, asserting that it targeted “military” objectives.
