Two Belgian films – La Danse des Renards and Loyen – have been selected for La Quinzaine des Cinéastes (Directors’ Fortnight), a major parallel section of the Cannes Film Festival. The 57th edition of this independent programme will take place from 14 to 24 May.
La Danse des Renards, the debut feature of Brussels-born Valéry Carnoy, tells the story of a young boxing prodigy whose passion is shattered by a tragic event. A graduate of the Brussels film school INSAS and trained in intercultural psychology, Carnoy made a name for himself with short films before moving on to feature-length cinema.
Nameless corpse
Dorian Jespers’ Loynes is a surreal short film set in 19th century Liverpool that tells the bizarre story of a nameless corpse. Jespers gained international attention with his earlier short film Sun Dog (2020), which was screened at numerous festivals including the European Film Awards and the Oscars.
Both films were supported by the Centre du Cinéma et de l’Audiovisuel of the French Community of Belgium. The Directors’ Fortnight, created after the events of May 1968 and run by the French Directors’ Guild, is known for championing innovative filmmaking and emerging voices outside of the festival’s main competition.
