Belgian Soldier Swims Full Length of Coastline for Charity
Belgian soldier Davy Billiau embarked on a journey early Tuesday morning, swimming the full length of Belgium’s coastline to raise funds for Wensambulance, a charity dedicated to fulfilling the final wishes of terminally ill patients. Billiau, a navy diver and bomb disposal expert, started his challenge at 6:30 AM in De Panne, aiming to complete the 67-kilometer course by Tuesday evening in Knokke-Heist, reports 24brussels.
By midday, Billiau had already reached the waters off Ostend, indicating strong progress. “Davy is feeling good and on schedule,” stated his colleagues, noting he is swimming at an average speed of 5.2 kilometers per hour despite increasing winds. A navy support boat is escorting him throughout the swim, and he received brief assistance from lifeguards in Koksijde.
In addition to raising essential funds, Billiau aims to set a record time for completing the swim along the Belgian coastline. His endeavor underscores both his physical capabilities and a heartfelt commitment to a noble cause.
