Jeline Vandromme Secures US Open Junior Title
Belgium’s Jeline Vandromme has won the junior competition at the US Open without dropping a set, reports 24brussels. The 17-year-old from Bruges is the first Belgian to have reached the final since Kirsten Flipkens in 2003, who also went on to win the title.
Vandromme triumphed over Sweden’s Lea Nilsson in straight sets, sealing her first junior singles title with a score of 7-6, 6-2 in just 90 minutes. This victory marks her 23rd consecutive win in singles competitions.
She becomes the first Belgian Grand Slam winner in the girls’ juniors since An-Sophie Mestach won the Australian Open in 2011.
“First and foremost, I’m incredibly proud,” Vandromme stated during a post-match press conference. “This was supposed to be my last junior tournament, and I wanted to make it memorable. I think I succeeded.”
In addition to her singles success, Vandromme also reached the final in doubles with her partner, Lithuanian Laima Vladson. However, they were defeated by Czech sisters Jana and Alena Kovackova, who were the third seeds, shortly after Vandromme’s singles victory.
Vandromme is the first Belgian girl in 23 years to reach the doubles final at the US Open, following in the footsteps of Flipkens and Elke Clijsters, who were runners-up in 2002.
