Justine Ghekiere Wins Belgian Road Championship in Binche

Justine Ghekiere of the AG Insurance–Soudal Team clinched the Belgian road championship on Sunday in Binche, executing a decisive attack in the final kilometer. Fien Van Eynde from the Fenix–Deceuninck Development Team followed closely, but Ghekiere emerged victorious in the sprint. Fleur Moors of Lidl–Trek secured third place, outpacing a chasing group several seconds behind., reports 24brussels.

The 29-year-old Ghekiere, who previously earned the mountain jersey at last year’s Tour, takes over the title from Lotte Kopecky of Team SD Worx–Protime. Kopecky, the reigning world champion and race favorite, played a significant role in the chase during an early breakaway, which was only reeled in late in the race. She opted out of contesting the bronze sprint and finished outside the top ten.

The championship concluded with a surprising and tactical finish, showcasing AG Insurance–Soudal’s effective team strategy. The race spanned 132.8 kilometers, starting and ending at the Grand Place square in Binche.

As the new national champion, Ghekiere’s victory underscores a significant achievement in her cycling career, reflecting her development as a competitive athlete in the sport.
