Mayor of Anderlecht bans Club Brugge fans from 18 May league match

Anderlecht mayor Fabrice Cumps has banned Club Brugge supporters from attending the league match between RSC Anderlecht and Club Brugge on 18 May. The decision follows violent incidents in Brussels during and after last Sunday’s Belgian Cup final between the two clubs at the King Baudouin Stadium.

Club Brugge fans were reportedly involved in attacks on pedestrians and shops in the Sint-Jans-Molenbeek and Jette districts. Later in the evening, Brussels youths retaliated against Brugge supporters.

“In view of the unacceptable behaviour of certain so-called supporters during the Belgian Cup final and the associated risks to public order,” said Mayor Cumps, “I have decided to ban Club Brugge fans from attending the game. This decision is aimed at protecting both local residents and RSCA supporters. The shocking scenes we witnessed last weekend must not be repeated in the municipality.”

Police in the South Zone, which includes Anderlecht, have been instructed to work with club officials and other authorities to implement the measure.
