WNBA Games Disrupted by Spectators Throwing Sex Toys

On Wednesday, Sporza reported that an unusual trend is emerging in the US Women’s National Basketball Association (WNBA). Matches have been disrupted by spectators throwing sex toys, mainly dildos, onto the court. While the players have responded with humour thus far, they are now demanding an end to these antics, citing safety concerns., reports 24brussels.

The latest incident took place in the closing minutes of a game between the Indiana Fever and an opposing team, which ended with a score of 100–91. A green dildo was thrown onto the court, apparently directed at player Sophie Cunningham, who had previously made a plea on social media, saying: “Stop throwing dildos on the court… you’re going to hurt one of us.”

Fortunately, there were no reported injuries. Kelsey Plum quickly removed the object from the court, and Cunningham laughed off the incident. LA Sparks player Julie Vanloo was seen embracing Cunningham in solidarity after the incident.

This behavior is not an isolated problem. Similar disruptions have been reported in Phoenix, Atlanta, and New York, the latter being home to Emma Meesseman. In New York, a dildo was reportedly thrown near a child, although it did not enter the playing area.

The first of these recent incidents occurred in Atlanta, resulting in the arrest of a spectator who has since been banned from attending WNBA games for a year.

Keep playing and don’t give it any attention

LA Sparks coach Lynne Roberts criticized this growing trend, describing it as “ridiculous, idiotic, and dangerous for the players.” Her advice to the players remains: “Keep playing and don’t give it any attention.”

While players have maintained a light-hearted attitude, many are now stressing that what began as a prank is evolving into a genuine safety risk. League officials have yet to outline any formal measures to prevent future incidents.
