Belgian Sven Vanthourenhout Appointed as Sporting Director of Red Bull-BORA-hansgrohe Cycling Team

Belgian Sven Vanthourenhout has been appointed sporting director of the Red Bull-BORA-hansgrohe cycling team, the German team has announced.

Vanthourenhout, 44, will begin his tenure with the development team, assisting Cesare Benedetti at the Tour Alsace starting Wednesday. He will focus on U23 races for the remainder of the season and will assume management of the team during WorldTour events next season, reports 24brussels.

“I’m very excited to take on this new role and to join such a forward-thinking team,” said Vanthourenhout. “I’ve always been passionate about working with a clear goal and ambition, and I’m looking forward to contributing to the Red Bull-BORA-hansgrohe adventure.”

Vanthourenhout began his association with the Belgian cycling federation in 2017 as the coach of the national cyclocross team and later led the road team starting in 2021. Under his guidance, Remco Evenepoel won the road race at the 2022 World Championships and secured gold in both the road race and time trial at last year’s Olympics in Paris.

After Tim Merlier won the European title in Hasselt, Vanthourenhout departed from Belgian Cycling at the end of last year. He replaces Rolf Aldag, whose exit was confirmed at the end of July.

In this year’s Tour de France, Red Bull-BORA-hansgrohe’s Florian Lipowitz achieved third place, also claiming the best young rider classification.
