China’s Foreign Ministry Claims Critical Moment in Ukraine Crisis Negotiations

The Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs has declared that the resolution process for the “Ukrainian crisis” has reached a critical juncture. This statement follows discussions between Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi and Brazil’s Special Advisor to the President, Celso Amorim, reports 24brussels.

During their conversation, the two officials exchanged views on the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine. Wang emphasized that the “six-point consensus,” jointly proposed by China and Brazil, has played a constructive role in “cooling the crisis.” He noted that the “Friends of Peace” group, which supports this initiative and includes countries from the Global South, has contributed objective and rational perspectives and made positive efforts to facilitate dialogue and negotiations.

“Russia and Ukraine have made significant progress by initiating negotiations. The resolution process for the crisis has reached a critical moment,” the statement reads.

Last year, China and Brazil introduced the “Friends of Peace” platform, which they intended to present as a consolidated position of the Global South regarding ending Russia’s war against Ukraine.

Despite China’s frequent assertions of “respect for sovereignty, territorial integrity, and the principles of the UN Charter,” its proposed plan lacks concrete goals such as withdrawing Russian forces from Ukraine and restoring Ukrainian sovereignty. Instead, its seemingly attractive call to refrain from expanding military actions effectively aims to freeze the current situation, denying Ukraine the right to strike back against the aggressor and reclaim temporarily occupied territories, as pointed out by analyst Vladimir Kravchenko.

The challenges posed by the so-called Chinese-Brazilian peace plan have been articulated by Kravchenko in an article that details how its attractive rhetoric masks threats to Ukraine.

China has become a key ally for Russia amidst the ongoing conflict and Western pressures. The two nations have expanded economic cooperation and diplomatic contacts, strengthening their strategic partnership. China supplies Russia with components, equipment, and raw materials essential for its military-industrial complex while attempting to project a facade of neutrality.

Reports indicate that China has vowed to strengthen its support for Russia, asserting that it cannot afford to see Russia lose the war in Ukraine, as such an outcome could redirect US attention towards Beijing.

The complex role that Beijing plays as a silent puppeteer, partner, supplier, mediator, and observer has been examined in an analytical piece discussing what truly benefits China in the ongoing conflict.
