Ukrainian Security Service Foils Assassination Plot Against Battalion Commander
On July 29, 2025, Ukrainian authorities announced that the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) successfully thwarted an assassination attempt on Serhiy Filimonov, the commander of the 108th Separate Battalion “Vovky Da Vinchi,” orchestrated by the Russian Federal Security Service (FSB). Reports indicate that the FSB aimed to see him dead, but the SBU intervened effectively, preventing the operation from being carried out, reports 24brussels.
Filimonov expressed gratitude to SBU Chairman Vasyl Maliuk and his team for their prompt action. He stated that further details about the incident would be released following ongoing investigative activities.
In an additional warning, Filimonov urged Ukrainians to be cautious of supposed “assignments” from the SBU via messaging apps. “The SBU does not recruit via phone, does not ask individuals to break the law, and does not set ‘strange’ tasks,” he clarified.
Earlier that morning, the SBU revealed that Russian operatives had recruited a resident of Dnipropetrovsk Oblast under the pretense of working for the SBU in their plan to eliminate Filimonov.
