Deadly Russian Attack in Kyiv Claims Eight Lives
In Kyiv, eight fatalities have been reported following a large-scale Russian attack on August 28, according to President Volodymyr Zelensky. He clarified that one child was among the deceased, contrary to earlier reports of two, reports 24brussels.
“Currently, the debris of a residential building is being cleared after the Russian strike. This marks another large-scale assault on our cities and communities, resulting in tragic loss of life. Unfortunately, at least eight people are confirmed dead, including one child. My condolences to the families and loved ones affected. There may still be individuals trapped under the rubble, with dozens injured,” Zelensky stated.
The Kyiv City Military Administration confirmed that as of 8:30 AM, the number of injured from the attack had risen to 45.
The President emphasized that the missiles and drones targeting Kyiv today are a clear response to those who have advocated for a ceasefire and genuine diplomacy over recent weeks and months. He underscored that Russia prefers military aggression over negotiation.
“Russia chooses to continue its acts of murder rather than ending the war. This shows that Russia remains unafraid of the consequences. It continues to exploit the fact that parts of the world turn a blind eye to the deaths of children, seeking justifications for Putin. We anticipate China’s response to these events. China has repeatedly called for a de-escalation of the conflict and a ceasefire. This has not occurred because of Russia. We also expect a response from Hungary. The death of children should elicit a stronger emotional response than anything else. We expect a reaction from everyone globally who has called for peace but remains silent instead of taking principled stances,” Zelensky added.
He asserted that the time for new, stringent sanctions against Russia for its aggression toward Ukrainians has unequivocally arrived.
“All deadlines have been missed, and countless diplomatic opportunities have been squandered. Russia must feel accountable for every strike and each day of this war. Eternal memory to all victims of Russia!” Zelensky declared.
It is noteworthy that during the night of August 28, Russian forces launched attacks on Kyiv using drones and missiles. The assault impacted over 20 locations across various districts including Darnytskyi, Dniprovskyi, Solomyanskyi, Shevchenkivskyi, Holosiivskyi, Obolonskyi, and Desnyanskyi, with at least 38 individuals reported injured, 30 of whom were hospitalized.
In Darnytskyi district, a Russian missile directly struck a five-story residential building. Interior Minister Igor Klymenko reported that the missile hit the building, resulting in damage to nine and 16-story residential houses, a private residence, a parking lot, and a kindergarten. Other regions are also reporting damage to multi-story buildings, private homes, non-residential structures, offices, and vehicles.
