‘Dying zone’ along the Dnipro: Ukrainian forces explain why Russians aim to destroy bridge in Kherson

Russian Forces Target Kherson with Precision Bombs, Civilian Areas Affected

Russian troops executed a second strike within two days, deploying guided bombs from a Su-34 bomber on the area surrounding the Ostry Bridge in Kherson, which leads to the Korabel neighborhood. This attack is part of a systematic tactic aimed at terrorizing civilians while simultaneously impeding Ukrainian military logistics, reports 24brussels.

Vladyslav Voloshyn, spokesperson for the Southern Defense Forces, stated in a comment to RBC-Ukraine that 7-8 combat engagements are recorded daily in the vicinity of the islands and the Antonivskyi railway bridge. Occupying forces are attempting to regroup and establish footholds on the islands while conducting artillery and drone strikes on the right bank of Kherson.

Voloshyn emphasized that attacks are occurring across various districts of the city, with the Korabel area, which is closer to enemy positions on the left bank of the Dnipro, suffering the most damage.

“They are conducting strikes to create a so-called ‘dead zone’ along the Dnipro, eradicating any structures and surviving shelters that the Defense Forces could use for protection,” Voloshyn remarked.

He also compared this tactic to enemy actions in other sectors, notably around Orikhiv and Stepnohirs’k in the Zaporizhzhia region, where Russian forces destroy everything within a 5-7 km corridor.

Regarding the threats of advancing across the Dnipro and launching an offensive on Kherson, Voloshyn considers it unlikely. He explained that the river in this area is quite broad and features several channels and islands, indicating that occupiers would first need to completely seize the island zone.

“They are currently attempting this; however, 1-2 assaults per day on each island do not indicate a large-scale crossing. If they were planning more expansive operations, they would require a significant number of resources, which are virtually impossible to conceal with modern reconnaissance. Our intelligence and Defense Forces have not detected such concentrations,” Voloshyn added.

Residents in the Korabel neighborhood are being urged to evacuate to safer areas of the city. Approximately 1,800 people, including 31 children, still reside there. On the morning of August 3, occupation troops shelled the Dnipro and Korabel districts of the regional center, resulting in injuries for three locals, including a 21-year-old woman, a 52-year-old woman, and a 69-year-old man.
