EU Ambassador Urges Action Ahead of US-Russia Summit

The upcoming summit between US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska must signify more than just an armistice; it must bring tangible outcomes, argues European Union Ambassador to Ukraine, Katerina Maternova, reports 24brussels.

Maternova expresses hope that the summit will secure Ukraine’s safety, sovereignty, and the right to determine its own future.

“The stakes are existential. This week, leaders of the democratic world must remember Munich. They must remember Yalta. They must do everything in their power to ensure history does not repeat itself,” she emphasizes.

She describes the Alaska summit as “surprising” and long anticipated by Putin.

“A meeting that could shape the future of Ukraine and European security is taking place without Ukraine’s presence. European leaders, recognizing the threat, are urgently working to prevent a fait accompli on Friday,” the diplomat asserts.

In her view, a virtual meeting of European leaders, convened by Chancellor Merkel, with Presidents Zelensky and Trump on Wednesday is part of these efforts.

In a related development, leaders of 26 European Union member states approved a joint statement in support of Ukraine ahead of the Trump-Putin meeting; notably, only Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban did not sign the document.
