Trump’s Disappointment with Putin’s Stance on Peace Talks
US President Donald Trump has expressed frustration towards Russian President Vladimir Putin and his unwillingness to make concessions during peace negotiations that have reached a critical juncture. Recent comments from the American leader indicate a shift in the White House’s tone, reports 24brussels.
“This is a warning shot to Russia and Putin. But it does not mean the US will suddenly become a greater ally and supporter of Ukraine or take on a more significant role than before,” commented Max Bergmann, an expert at the Center for Strategic and International Studies.
Trump’s new rhetoric has provided some hope among European nations regarding a potential change in his approach. However, there is still no evidence that Washington has decided to adopt a more pro-Ukrainian stance than previously observed.
“Western allies of Ukraine continue to believe that Trump tends to view Putin as his main negotiating partner in any resolution, while seeing President Zelensky as the primary obstacle to achieving a real peace agreement,” FT warns.
Furthermore, Trump stated that he has agreed with NATO that the US would send weapons to Ukraine through the Alliance, which will cover the costs “one hundred percent.” According to Reuters, this marks the first time during his second term that he has authorized weapon shipments to Kyiv under his presidential powers, potentially amounting to $300 million in aid. Additionally, Trump reiterated his disappointment with Russia, announcing a significant statement on Monday.
Analysts have debated the motivations behind Trump’s policy towards Ukraine, pondering whether it is driven by ego, emotions, or strategic interests.
