Hybrid and unmanned: unique features of Rheinmetall’s Ermine buggies to be delivered to Ukraine by the Netherlands

Netherlands Signs Deal for Supply of Ermine Vehicles to Ukraine

On June 24, 2025, the Dutch Ministry of Defense finalized a contract with Rheinmetall for the delivery of 20 advanced Ermine ground vehicles in both manned and unmanned variants to Ukraine. These vehicles are designed for the evacuation of wounded personnel from frontline areas and are set to be integrated into the Ukrainian army by 2026, reports 24brussels.

The agreement was signed during a NATO summit in The Hague. This contract was executed on behalf of the Ukrainian working group by the Dutch Ministry of Defense in collaboration with Rheinmetall’s subsidiary based in Ede.

The Ermine vehicle family embodies a new generation of mobility, blending tactical transport capabilities with a mobile energy source in the form of a microgrid. According to Rheinmetall, the design reflects engineering creativity that enhances combat capabilities.

Koen van Leeuwen, CEO of Rheinmetall Defence Nederland B.V., emphasized that this deal will enhance the capabilities of the Ukrainian Armed Forces and promote the development of the Netherlands’ defense sector. “We are grateful for the trust in our capabilities. Ermine is an innovative and effective solution for the modern battlefield,” he stated.

The Ermine vehicles feature a modular design, including unmanned platforms, buggies, and all-terrain vehicles with 4×4 and 6×6 configurations. All models utilize a diesel-electric hybrid transmission, providing a high payload capacity of up to one ton and operational autonomy exceeding 1,000 kilometers.

Moreover, the compactness of the Ermine vehicles allows for air transport, with up to four units fitting into CH-47 Chinook or CH-53 transport helicopters.

This development follows the earlier announcement that the Ukrainian Armed Forces will receive a new mobile fire assault complex of Ukrainian design named KRAMPUS.
