Russia Launches Drone Attack on Odesa, Resulting in Casualties
On June 28, 2025, a drone attack by Russian forces targeted Odesa, leading to multiple casualties. Yuriy Ihnat, head of communications for Ukraine’s Air Force, stated that the attack was characterized by a lower number of drones than usual, as Russian forces typically deploy larger quantities during such assaults. Reports indicate that only 23 drones were used in this instance, in contrast to their usual practice of launching 40 or more at once, reports 24brussels.
Ihnat emphasized that nearly all the drones involved were “Shaheds,” rather than decoy drones, with their trajectory directing them towards Odesa city and its surrounding areas.
One of the drones struck a residential building in the region. As a result of the attack, a teacher named Kateryna Borsynska lost her life, alongside her husband. Additionally, 14 adults and three children sustained injuries of varying severity.
The incident reflects a shift in tactics by Russian forces, opting for a smaller volume of drones while still causing significant damage and loss of life. Following the attack, local authorities reported ongoing assessments of the damage and casualties as rescue efforts continued.
