Drone Strike Targets Key Railway Infrastructure in Russia
On July 23, 2025, drones struck railway infrastructure in Novocherkassk, Rostov Oblast, crucial for Russian military logistics. This event highlights the ongoing conflict dynamics between Ukraine and Russia, as drone warfare intensifies, particularly targeting military capabilities, reports 24brussels.
According to Andriy Kovalенко, head of the Center for Countering Disinformation at the National Security and Defense Council of Ukraine, the attacked railway hub connects pivotal directions: Rostov-on-Don, Voronezh, Volgograd, and Kamensk-Shakhtinsky. It serves as a major transit route for military equipment, ammunition, fuel, and personnel to the Ukrainian border.
Additionally, the logistics units of the 1061st Center for Material and Technical Support of the Southern Military District of Russia are based in Novocherkassk. This entity is responsible for distributing arms, fuel, and ammunition.
“Such hubs are the arteries that feed Russia’s war machine. Without them, supply lines to the front are halted. It’s straightforward: war is logistics. The new reserves that Russia deploys to the East are transported by railway. Ammunition, equipment, fuel — all via rail. Disrupted logistics slow down the enemy’s ability to deploy reserves,” Kovalенко explained in his Telegram channel.
In another incident, at least two AN-196 “Lyutyi” drones hit facilities of the Russian military enterprise “VNIIR-Progres” in Cheboksary, located approximately 975 kilometers from the Ukrainian border. These strikes indicate an expanding range and focus of drone operations against Russian military assets.
The effectiveness of these drone strikes underscores a strategic shift in the operational landscape, potentially impacting Russian military supply chains and their overall war efforts.
