Latvia to Enhance Ukrainian Defense Capabilities with New Armored Vehicles

Latvia has announced its support for Ukraine by providing a batch of new Patria 6×6 armored vehicles, aimed at bolstering the capabilities of Ukrainian defense forces. These vehicles entered serial production in 2021 under a joint program among Finland, Estonia, and Latvia.

This was reported on July 5 by the Ukrainian Ministry of Defense on its official website. The announcement came during the visit of Ukrainian Deputy Defense Minister Valeriy Churkin to Latvia, where he discussed urgent defense matters with Latvian Minister of Defense Andris Spruds regarding protection against Russian aggression.

Churkin expressed gratitude to the Latvian government for its decision to deliver significant military aid to the Ukrainian Armed Forces. “I thank the people and government of Latvia for their comprehensive and unwavering support, including the new military aid package. Latvia’s consistent and clear stance in support of our struggle is crucial and valuable for Ukraine,” he emphasized.

While the specifics of Latvia’s material-technical assistance package were not detailed, Churkin indicated that it includes not only the new armored vehicles but also various other weapons and equipment that will enhance the capabilities of the Ukrainian army.

Additionally, during the visit, the Ukrainian delegation held several bilateral meetings with representatives from governmental structures and leading defense manufacturers from partner nations. Discussions focused on further collaboration steps, technology exchange, and strengthening defense capabilities.

Meanwhile, NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte expressed hopes that the United States would continue its support for Ukraine. However, Polish National Defense Minister Wladyslaw Kosiniak-Kamysz has expressed disappointment over the U.S. decision to temporarily halt the transfer of missile and artillery supplies to Ukraine, noting that some weaponry remains in storage in Poland.

As the military landscape evolves, further developments in international defense cooperation are anticipated, signaling ongoing support for Ukraine amidst its continuing conflict with Russia.
