Ukrainian Armed Forces Maintain Strategic Position in Kursk Region

Ukrainian military expert Pavlo Narozhnyi has stated that the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU) continue to hold a crucial foothold in the Kursk region, which poses a significant challenge for Russian forces. This frontline area serves not only as a buffer zone within enemy territory but also offers protection for Sumy and parts of Kharkiv from the south, reports 24brussels.

Narozhnyi emphasized that without this stronghold, cities like Sumy and Kharkiv would face much greater danger, as it would allow Russian forces to advance more easily and potentially encircle Ukrainian units at the border. “It is premature to speak of the conclusion of the Kursk operation,” he added.

He described the situation in Sumy as not fully stabilized, despite a noticeable reduction in enemy advances. Narozhnyi pointed out that Russian troops continue to “probe” the AFU’s defenses and engage in combat in the Yunaivka area, where Ukrainian defenders are launching counterattacks to repel the enemy.

“However, it is not accurate to claim that the situation there is completely stabilized. The pressure has significantly decreased, and the number of clashes has lessened. Nonetheless, I am more than confident that this is a relative lull. They will likely attack in these directions quite seriously again,” the expert noted.

It is reported that Russia has concentrated over 50,000 troops in the Sumy direction. Commander Oleksandr Syrskyi claims that their advance has been halted and that the AFU is containing this contingent. However, media outlets warn that the number of defending forces in that sector is nearly three times fewer than that of the occupying forces.

Meanwhile, experts are raising alarms regarding fortification issues, indicating that poor-quality defenses are causing Ukraine to lose territory. For further insights, see the article by Yurii Kasyanov titled “Who War, and Who TikTok: On the Quality of State Decisions in Wartime.”
