Medvedev Comments on Alaska Summit Outcomes
Dmitry Medvedev, Deputy Chairman of the Russian Security Council, provided insights into the initial outcomes of the recent summit in Alaska, held on August 15, 2025. In a statement on his Telegram channel, he emphasized that the United States and Russia place the responsibility for ending the war on Ukraine and Europe. Moreover, he noted that the summit demonstrated that negotiations could continue alongside military actions and without preconditions, reports 24brussels.
Medvedev outlined the following key outcomes of the meeting:
- A full-fledged mechanism for high-level meetings between Russia and the US has been restored, described as “calm, without ultimatums or threats”;
- Vladimir Putin articulated Russia’s conditions for ending the war in Ukraine in detail to Donald Trump;
- The US President refrained from escalating pressure on Russia (i.e., introducing sanctions), “at least for now”;
- The meeting proved that negotiations are possible without preconditions and can occur simultaneously with ongoing military operations;
- Both Moscow and Washington squarely placed the responsibility for achieving future results in negotiations to halt hostilities on Kyiv and Europe.
The summit between Trump and Putin concluded without the expected results that Ukraine, Europe, and the US had hoped for. There was no agreed ceasefire, and although the American president rated the meeting a “10 out of 10,” Western media characterized it as a humiliation for the United States. Journalists in attendance noted that it seemed as though Putin came, asserted his position, and left without resolution.
Immediately following the summit, Trump, as promised, called Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. While details of their conversation remain undisclosed, the US leader stated in an interview afterward that he and Putin had “largely agreed” that the war in Ukraine could conclude through “territorial exchanges” and certain security guarantees from the United States. He added that from this point forward, “everything depends on Zelensky.”
