Drones Evolve: Russia Deploys Enhanced Shahed UAVs with Precision Targeting
On September 8, 2025, reports emerged indicating that Russian forces have begun utilizing advanced Shahed drones equipped with cameras and remote control systems, reports 24brussels.
Ukrainian electronic warfare and communication expert Serhiy Beskrestnov highlighted fresh findings concerning debris from downed drones and previously published images of these modifications.
The expert, sharing insights on the “Communication from Serhii Flash” Telegram channel, noted the distinctive features of the drones: “As you can see, the antennas are located at the edges of the wings. Modems and cameras are difficult to recover intact.”
Beskrestnov elaborated that this new version of Shahed drones can be remotely operated from inside Russia, enhancing their ability to conduct reconnaissance and striking moving targets with unprecedented accuracy.
Earlier, the expert had hypothesized that terrestrial objects in Ukraine might be facilitating target tracking for the Shahed drones, further complicating the operational landscape. Vadym Skibitsky, Deputy Chief of the Main Intelligence Directorate of the Ukrainian Ministry of Defense, noted a significant evolution in the operational tactics for using these drones: “Previously, they would fly directly towards a target; now, they are capable of prolonged maneuvering, altering altitudes and flight paths,” he stated.
The continuous adaptation of tactics in the use of drones by Russian forces underscores the dynamic nature of the conflict, highlighting the ongoing need for robust countermeasures as both sides navigate an increasingly complex battlefield.
