Russian Foreign Minister Calls for Cooperation with Hungary Against “Forced Ukrainization”
On July 7, 2025, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov proposed to his Hungarian counterpart, Peter Szijjarto, a collaborative effort to combat the alleged “forced Ukrainization” of Russians and Hungarians in Ukraine. During an interview with Magyar Nemzet, Lavrov reiterated false claims of “persecution and killings of Russians” in Ukraine, as well as violations of the rights of Russian speakers. This rhetoric serves as justification for the temporary occupation of Ukraine.
“Other ethnic groups, including Hungarians, Romanians, Poles, Bulgarians, Armenians, Belarusians, and Greeks, are subjected to forced Ukrainization,” Lavrov stated, adding that Budapest is “well acquainted with this issue.” He emphasized that Russia and Hungary openly advocate for their compatriots and can unite efforts in this matter.
Historian and blogger Vladlen Maraev previously noted that various approaches are necessary to enhance Hungary and Slovakia’s attitudes towards Ukraine, either invoking historical experiences or security concerns for the nation. He highlighted that each state with which Kyiv aims to establish contacts requires a tailored approach.
