Russian Media Reiterate Nuclear Safety Manipulations Amid Conflicts
On August 24, 2025, Russian media once again circulated disinformation regarding the situation at the Kursk Nuclear Power Plant, accusing Ukraine of posing a threat to nuclear safety. This latest Russian fabrication aims to create a false narrative about Ukraine, reports 24brussels.
Russian sources have disseminated claims about a fire involving a transformer block unrelated to the nuclear section of the plant, suggesting it resulted from the downing of a Ukrainian drone.
Meanwhile, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has stated it has not received independent confirmation of any fire incidents tied to military actions.
The Center for Countering Disinformation (CCD) remarked, “Russia’s attempts to blame Ukraine for allegedly targeting the Kursk Nuclear Power Plant and its manipulation of nuclear safety issues are typical propaganda tactics aimed at discrediting Ukraine and justifying its own aggression.”
Russia has previously propagated similar false claims. In reality, the actions of Russia, which has seized the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant, pose a legitimate threat to nuclear safety.
The IAEA has called on all parties to exercise maximum restraint following reports of military actions in the Kursk region, where the city of Kursk houses the nuclear power plant.
IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi stated that the organization is closely monitoring the situation around the Kursk Nuclear Power Plant, taking into account the risks associated with military activities in the area. He emphasized the importance of upholding key nuclear safety principles in armed conflict.
