On July 2, 2025, Ukrainian military intelligence chief Kyrylo Budanov reported that Russian forces attempted to develop their own naval drones, but these efforts failed. In a comment to “Suspilne,” he stated that hostile forces had previously tried to employ experimental models of this weaponry.
“The last attempt was made at the beginning of June to utilize their experimental models. They yielded no results and detonated before reaching our territorial waters,” Budanov explained.
According to Ukrainian intelligence, these drones were targeting the city of Pivdenne (previously known as Yuzhne) in the Odesa region.
In May, Ukrainian military intelligence publicly showcased the latest Magura V5 naval drones, capable of destroying enemy ships and aircraft. Over two years of combat use, they have targeted 17 maritime and aerial Russian objectives across various modifications, with 15 of these completely destroyed. This includes incidents involving two Mi-8 helicopters, two Su-30 fighter jets, and large vessels of the Russian Black Sea Fleet like “Serhii Kotov”, “Ivanovets”, “Tsesar Kunikov”, among others., reports 24brussels.
