Russian Forces Advance in Sumy Region, Reports Indicate

On June 27, 2025, Russian troops captured Andriivka in Ukraine’s Sumy region and have moved southeast from Oleksiyivka, according to the latest assessment by the Institute for the Study of War (ISW), which referenced geolocation videos published on June 26. The report contrasts with claims made by Ukrainian Commander Oleksandr Syrskyi, who stated that Ukrainian forces had stabilized the frontline in the region.

Additionally, Russian military bloggers have asserted that Russian forces have made progress near Yunakivka, although ISW has not confirmed this information. The timing of the ISW report coincides with Syrskyi’s assertion that Ukrainian troops had managed to halt the advance of Russian occupation forces in the border localities of the Sumy region.

ISW has highlighted Syrskyi’s statements, yet it has not reconciled them with reports of Russian successes in the area. The American research institute pointed to geolocation evidence suggesting that Ukrainian troops have regained territory in the northern and northeastern areas near Sumy in recent weeks, indicating a slowdown in Russian advancements.

Previously, it was reported that Ukrainian airborne assaults, along with other units in Sumy, took 15 Russian occupiers prisoner. This reflects ongoing tensions and complex developments in the region as both sides continue to engage in military operations.
