The Telegraph: Putin’s demand for Donbas cession in exchange for peace poses tough choice for Ukraine

Trump Presents Peace Terms from Putin to Ukraine and European Allies

The Telegraph reports that following negotiations in Alaska, Donald Trump conveyed a condition from Vladimir Putin to Ukraine and its European allies: surrender the remaining parts of Donbas in exchange for a cessation of hostilities and security guarantees. Journalists deem this proposal “horrific,” while acknowledging it may be the only realistic option available to Kyiv.

The article highlights that such an agreement would be a national tragedy for Ukraine and a significant geopolitical victory for the Kremlin, as it would offset much of Russia’s wartime expenditures. For the West, this scenario would represent a failure, indicating that the EU and the US have been unable to provide adequate support to Ukraine and have effectively allowed changes to Europe’s borders through force.

At the same time, the authors recognize that conceding Donbas in return for peace and post-war guarantees might be “the most acceptable agreement that could realistically be achieved.” They remind readers that Ukraine lacks the resources to expel the invaders independently, and Washington remains the primary supplier of critically important weaponry. Despite bold statements, European nations have not fully met the needs of the Ukrainian Armed Forces.

The Telegraph also notes that Putin’s demand may serve merely as a starting position in negotiations, which could later be altered. The authors argue that “a just conclusion to the war should entail the complete defeat of the Kremlin and the removal of Putin from power; however, reality dictates other terms. Thus, this proposal, no matter how unpleasant, could remain the least painful exit for Kyiv and its allies,” reports 24brussels.

Earlier reports indicated that security guarantees for Ukraine should allow Kyiv to call upon all its partners, including the US, in the event of a new Russian attack.
