Trump’s Peace Initiative: Ceasefire or Deferred Threat?

March 2025

Donald Trump’s proposal for a temporary ceasefire in Ukraine has provoked a mixed reaction in the international community. Although the former US president himself claims that it is possible to stop the war, the reality is different: Russia does not demonstrate readiness for real peace, and without long-term security guarantees, Ukraine risks facing only a delayed threat.

Peace or a tactical pause for Russia?

Russia continues to attack Ukrainian cities, including civilian targets in Odesa, Kropyvnytskyi, and Sumy. This is a clear signal that it has no intention of stopping its aggression, even against the backdrop of possible agreements.

The Kremlin’s recent statements about its readiness for a 30-day pause in attacks on the Ukrainian energy system look like a temporary tactical move, not a step toward sustainable peace. The Ukrainian government views such proposals as a maneuver to regroup Russian troops and prepare for new offensive operations.

Ukraine’s position and US support

During his talks with Donald Trump, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy emphasized that freezing the conflict is not a solution to the war. Kyiv insists that any peace initiatives should be based on security guarantees and international control.

The United States confirms its long-term support for Ukraine, which is manifested in the supply of additional Patriot air defense systems. This shows that Washington understands the real threat from Russian aggression and the need to strengthen Ukraine’s defense.

Is Russia capable of a new escalation?

Russia’s failures in 2022-2023 proved its limited capacity to conduct large-scale offensive operations. However, a temporary ceasefire without control and strict guarantees can only give the aggressor the opportunity to regain strength and prepare for new attacks.

Truce as a risk for Ukraine

Without real deterrence mechanisms and security guarantees, a temporary ceasefire can only postpone the war, not end it. Ukraine insists on the full restoration of its territorial integrity, and any compromises without a stable peace could become a trap for the future of Ukrainian statehood.

While Trump proposes a truce, Russia continues to attack. Will this initiative be a chance for peace or just another pause before a new phase of war? The answer will depend on Ukraine’s determination and the support of its allies.
