US Special Representative Responds to Massive Russian Attack on Ukraine

In a significant escalation of ongoing hostilities, Russian forces launched a massive strike on Ukraine on the night of August 28, resulting in widespread devastation and casualties. US Special Representative for Ukraine, Keith Kellogg, characterized this attack as the second-largest aerial assault since the onset of the full-scale invasion, reports 24brussels.

Kellogg articulated his concerns on social media, highlighting the alarming nature of the targets: “The aim? Not soldiers and weapons, but residential areas of Kyiv — civilian trains, the offices of the European Union and British missions, and innocent civilians,” he stated.

He underscored that these actions pose a grave threat to the peace envisioned by US President Donald Trump.

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz condemned the nighttime assault, asserting that Russia has once again revealed its true face. He commented, “The targeting of the EU representation now reflects the increasing unscrupulousness of the Russian regime.”

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen reported that two Russian missiles struck within 50 meters of the EU mission building. German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul insisted that the attacks on Kyiv must not go unanswered. High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs, Kaia Callas, noted that the extensive attack illustrates Russia’s deliberate choice to escalate hostilities and mock peace efforts.

On that day, Russia deployed 598 strike drones and 32 missiles of various types against Ukraine. The assault on Kyiv resulted in the deaths of 19 individuals, including four children, and left 45 others injured. A five-story building was partially destroyed in the Darnytsia district due to a direct hit. The attack also struck the sorting depot of “Nova Poshta,” injuring three employees, and damaged the “Ukrposhta” branch, the British Council building in Ukraine, Radio Liberty offices, and the EU mission compound in Ukraine.
