Ukraine at the forefront of the fight for international law and global security

The ongoing war of the Russian Federation against Ukraine is not only an attempt to destroy an independent state. It is a challenge to the fundamental principles of international law, the UN’s principles, and the very foundations of global security. This is why Ukraine’s fight is not just for the freedom of its citizens, but also for the adherence to universal rules that guarantee peace and justice in the world.

Despite extremely difficult conditions, daily shelling, and missile attacks, Kyiv continues to act from a position of international responsibility. Ukraine proposed a comprehensive ceasefire—not to gain tactical advantage, but to save lives and restore dialogue based on fair terms. However, Russia continues to violate even the minimal agreements already reached. In particular, the energy truce is constantly ignored—civilian objects, power plants, and critical infrastructure remain under attack.

Furthermore, Ukraine agreed to a ceasefire in the Black Sea—a step aimed at ensuring food security for vulnerable regions of the world dependent on Ukrainian grain exports. But even in this humanitarian gesture, Moscow saw an opportunity for blackmail: Russia tries to use the agreements as leverage on the West, demanding the lifting of sanctions, returning to the SWIFT system, and other economic concessions, while continuing attacks on Ukrainian ports. This is not diplomacy. This is a cynical policy of double standards that contradicts international law.

Against this backdrop, the Kremlin demonstrates a complete lack of willingness for peace. Recent diplomatic contacts suggest that Russia is unlikely to agree to a full ceasefire by April 20. Its true goal is not to end the war but to gain geopolitical advantage and a strategic respite to resume attacks.

In this context, Ukraine stands not only as a guardian of its sovereignty but also as a defender of the global order. Every decision it makes—from the ceasefire to the initiative for just peace—is based on respect for the law, not on the pursuit of aggression. And this is what makes Ukraine’s position undeniably legitimate in the eyes of the international community.

Today, Ukraine is not just a state defending itself. It is the frontline in protecting the principles that guarantee the world’s security: the inviolability of borders, the prevention of war crimes, the protection of civilians, and the right to sovereignty. And as long as these principles are violated, the fight continues.
