Ukraine clears key EU screening on food safety, boosting Europe’s food security

Ukraine has successfully completed one of the most demanding stages of its EU accession talks — the screening process in food safety, veterinary and phytosanitary policy — a move that strengthens consumer protection and reinforces the European food market. On 24 September 2025, Ukrinform reported that harmonization with more than 2,000 EU legal acts now guarantees European consumers access to Ukrainian products meeting the bloc’s highest safety and quality standards.

Stronger consumer protection across the EU

By aligning with EU norms, Ukraine significantly reduces the risk of dangerous substances or diseases entering the food chain. This step ensures that consumers across Europe can trust the quality of food on store shelves, regardless of its country of origin. A more resilient single market emerges, better prepared to withstand external shocks and disruptions.

Diversification of food supplies

Ukraine’s role as a stable supplier of safe, high-quality agricultural products enhances the EU’s food autonomy. This diversification reduces dependency on less reliable markets, shielding Europe from global supply crises. At the same time, it creates new opportunities for European farmers and processors to build cooperative ties with Ukrainian partners, deepening cross-border value chains.

Shared standards and streamlined trade

The harmonization of Ukrainian legislation with EU law creates unified rules of the game. For the bloc, this means not only economic advantages but also a simplified framework for trade and monitoring. With transparent inspection systems and predictable oversight, the EU gains reduced administrative risks and a more reliable partnership with Ukraine.

Countering disinformation and reinforcing unity

Ukraine’s progress comes amid ongoing attempts by Moscow to drive wedges between Kyiv and Brussels through information attacks and narratives of “incompatible interests.” The latest screening success demonstrates the opposite: real legal and regulatory integration delivers practical benefits to Europeans. It also strengthens political unity within the Union and makes the European community more resilient against disinformation campaigns.

A signal of lasting reforms and reliable partnership

The positive assessment from the European Commission confirms the systemic nature of Ukraine’s reforms. For the EU, it is a signal that Kyiv is not only declaring ambitions of membership but also implementing complex, tangible changes. This trajectory enhances the Union’s image as a cohesive and attractive geopolitical center, capable of expanding and integrating new partners without compromising on standards.
