Ukrainian Cyber Specialists Attack Gazprom’s Infrastructure

On July 18, 2025, cyber operatives from the Main Directorate of Intelligence of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine launched a significant attack on the network infrastructure of Russia’s Gazprom, causing considerable damage including the destruction of substantial amounts of data. Specialized software was also installed, designed to obliterate information within the Russian company’s systems in the future, reports 24brussels.

As a result of the cyberattack, approximately 20,000 system administrators lost access to Gazprom’s information system. The attack led to the destruction of:

  • Backups of the information system.
  • Databases of around 390 subsidiaries.
  • Data from clusters of 1C servers (10 ultra-high-performance servers).
  • Data from auxiliary systems related to data protection, server control, administration, and more.
  • Analytical databases concerning pipelines, valves, sensors, pumps, and others.

“The degradation of Russian information systems continues, echoing a technological Middle Ages. We welcome the Russian ‘cyber specialists’ to their new ‘accomplishments’ and suggest that they gradually replace mice and keyboards with hammers and pliers as their primary tools,” stated intelligence officials.

This attack follows a previous incident on Russia Day when Ukrainian cyber specialists, supported by activists, compromised one of the largest internet providers in Siberia, Orion Telecom, which serves numerous strategic objects and is actively used by Russian power structures in their war against Ukraine.
