Upgraded Shahed Drone with AI Capabilities Revealed by Ukrainian Intelligence

On June 27, 2025, Ukrainian military intelligence disclosed information regarding the electronic components of a newly upgraded strike drone, the MS Shahed-136, which is equipped with a camera and artificial intelligence features. The drone was intercepted on the Sumy front earlier this month, reports 24brussels.

According to intelligence analysts, this drone was manufactured not in Russia but in Iran, as indicated by the materials used in the fuselage and the configuration of the electronic components. However, some modifications suggest a collaborative effort between Russia and Iran to enhance the capabilities of the Shahed drones.

The upgraded Shahed integrates a high-speed mini-computer, Nvidia Jetson Orin, specifically designed for AI applications and video processing, as well as an infrared camera similar to one previously announced by Russian forces, which is already in use in their V2U drones.

This module is intended for processing camera data and comparing it against pre-loaded models for automated targeting or acquisition, allowing the drone to function as a reconnaissance tool.

The upgraded drone also features enhancements to the Iranian Nasir satellite navigation system, which has been improved to an eight-channel design.

“The unit examined was connected to a four-element antenna capable of receiving GPS signals in the L1 and L5 bands. There are reports of an antenna arranged in a circular pattern with eight elements, similar to those previously identified in Russian-assembled Shahed drones,” stated the Ukrainian military intelligence.

Additionally, the drone includes a radio modem and a system for transmitting video, telemetry, and/or group control.

Ukrainian intelligence noted that these developments indicate a continued exchange of technology between Iran and Russia, which may extend beyond the Russian-Ukrainian conflict if Iran employs Russian technical expertise in its destabilizing actions in the Middle East.

The use of the Shahed kamikaze drone fitted with an integrated camera, AI module for machine vision, and a direct radio control system from within Russia was reported on June 18. Experts have indicated that the drone can be remotely operated from distances up to 150 kilometers, and possibly further with the use of airborne relays in Ukrainian airspace.
