Russian Forces Not Targeting Sumy City, Claims Ukrainian Official
On June 29, 2025, Andriy Kovalenko, head of the Center for Countering Disinformation at Ukraine’s National Security and Defense Council, stated that Russian troops are not targeting the city of Sumy with artillery. He noted, however, that certain types of multiple launch rocket systems from the Kursk region could reach this location, reports 24brussels.
Kovalenko clarified in his Telegram channel that there is currently no evidence of Russian artillery being positioned in the border villages and towns of Sumy region, where assault infantry groups are active and fierce fighting is underway.
Earlier today, reports emerged that Russian forces had shelled the village of Pishchane, located less than a kilometer from Sumy, using artillery.
Ukrainian Armed Forces Commander Oleksandr Syrskyi confirmed that Ukrainian defenders have successfully halted the advance of occupying troops in border areas of the Sumy region, immobilizing approximately 50,000 Russian soldiers. Furthermore, Ukrainian forces have made gains in Yunakivka, advancing between 200 to 700 meters, and have liberated the area of Andriivka from Russian control.
