Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky arrived in Washington for negotiations with Donald Trump. The main topics of discussion were the future of U.S.-Ukrainian partnership and security guarantees for Ukraine.
The meeting took place in a tense atmosphere. Sources familiar with the negotiations noted that Zelensky took a firm stance and did not succumb to any pressure. He made it clear that a ceasefire without security guarantees would only freeze the conflict and give Russia a chance to regroup for a new offensive.
Speaking to American politicians, Zelensky emphasized that Ukraine would not become a bargaining chip and would not agree to decisions that could weaken its position. French President Emmanuel Macron, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk, Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez, and other European leaders expressed their support for Ukraine, stressing that its fight is a fight for all of democratic Europe.
Despite political changes in Washington, support for Ukraine remains strong. U.S. Senate leaders reacted sharply to the White House meeting. Senator Chuck Schumer stated, “President Trump is doing Putin’s dirty work,” while Senator Chris Murphy called the meeting “a complete humiliation for America.”
The European Union continues to work on new aid packages, which will be implemented regardless of Washington’s stance. NATO and the U.S. Congress also understand the strategic importance of supporting Kyiv.
Ukraine has already proven that, even under the most challenging conditions, it can effectively hold back one of the world’s largest armies. This is the best investment in global security.
