Albanian Parliament Approves Tax Breaks to Boost Luxury Tourism
The Albanian Parliament has approved significant tax breaks aimed at promoting luxury hotels and enhancing the tourism sector, reports 24brussels. The proposal, put forward by Blendi Klosi, a member of parliament, aims to elevate the industry by catering to a select segment that focuses on raising standards.
Evidence of success can already be seen, with renowned international brands such as Marriott International, Meliá Hotels International, and Radisson Hotel Group establishing properties in Albania. Additionally, Jared Kushner, son-in-law of former U.S. President Donald Trump, is planning to transform an Albanian island into a high-end retreat.
However, critics are raising alarms about the ecological and logistical implications of this rapid development. They argue that the local beaches lack the capacity to accommodate the influx of tourists expected at such resorts, and that natural landscapes are suffering degradation in the name of progress.
The controversy has intensified around the upcoming Vlora Airport in southern Albania, which is poised to launch operations and has faced backlash over its proximity to a protected natural area. Activists and residents have also voiced opposition to water diversion projects designed to supply coastal resorts, leading to widespread protests in affected communities.
“Greed has replaced sensible planning — and, for that matter, love of the land, nature, and the homeland,” stated Alfred Lela, spokesperson for the opposition Democratic Party.
Tourism Growth or Environmental Crisis?
As the Albanian government pushes forward with initiatives to attract luxury tourism, the question remains whether the benefits will be outweighed by the potential environmental costs. While there are still less developed areas of Albania for thrill-seekers to explore, the days of cost-effective trips to this Balkan destination may be coming to an end.
