Charges Filed Against Argentine President Javier Milei
On August 15, 2025, Federal Prosecutor Federico Dominguez from the San Isidro court in Buenos Aires formally charged Argentine President Javier Milei, lawmaker Lilia Lemoine, presidential aide Santiago Oria, and far-right influencer Daniel Parisini. The charges follow a complaint lodged by journalist Julia Mengolini and include threats, public intimidation, embezzlement of public funds, condoning crime, and illicit association, reports 24brussels.
Dominguez’s ruling mandates investigative measures to identify those allegedly threatening Mengolini and her family. The prosecutor has also ordered police protection and the provision of a panic button for the journalist, emphasizing the need for evidence to ascertain the existence of an organization purportedly funded with public resources and aimed at silencing critics of Milei’s administration.
In her complaint filed on July 15, Mengolini named additional individuals, including Freedon Advances Party provincial lawmaker Agustin Romo and various far-right influencers like Nazarena Aylen Colaleo and Franco Antunes Puchol, suggesting widespread collusion.
Recently, evidence surfaced regarding the significant increases in the personal assets of Milei and his sister, raising questions about the president’s statements regarding financial constraints. A tweet from teleSUR highlighted these concerns, questioning, “Milei says there’s no money. But for whom is there no money?”
Earlier in July, Milei had filed a defamation lawsuit against Mengolini amidst a wave of online harassment directed at her. His claims were spurred by Mengolini’s remarks during a radio program, which insinuated an inappropriate relationship between the president and his sister. She interpreted Milei’s actions as a “counterattack” in light of her own pending legal action against him and noted that she had received death threats amid escalating tensions.
When asked if she regarded the threats seriously, Mengolini stated, “Yes. Things don’t happen until they happen. In this country, someone tried to kill Cristina,” referencing the assassination attempt on former President Cristina Fernandez in September 2022.
