Pakistan: Authorities reopen major roads in Punjab as TLP marchers head to Islamabad in “solidarity with Palestinians”

Authorities in Pakistan reopened several major roads across Punjab on October 13, 2025, as Tehreek-i-Labbaik Pakistan (TLP) protesters continued their sit-ins in Muridke and Sadhoke, attempting to reach Islamabad to stage a protest in “solidarity with Palestinians,” reports 24brussels.

The main TLP procession reached Muridke after breaking through police security the previous day, following violent clashes in Lahore that resulted in injuries to more than four dozen police personnel. Protesters established a sit-in in Muridke, where they dug trenches along the GT Road to hinder their progress.

In a Sunday evening update, the motorway police announced the reopening of the Sialkot Motorway, while roads from Chowk Yateem to Scheme Morr and Babu Sabu remained closed. Earlier, authorities reopened the M1, M2, and M3 motorways for traffic, permitting travel on the Swat Expressway, Hazara Motorway, and Hakla DI Khan Motorway, according to a police traffic alert. Containers were removed from several internal and external routes.

Roads reopened for traffic included parts of Margalla Road, Jinnah Avenue, Seventh Avenue, and various routes leading to Bani Gala, Park Road, and other localities. TLP spokesperson Usman Naushahi confirmed that protesters remained in Muridke and Sadhoke, stating, “We have not gone further yet.” Meanwhile, the federal government deployed over 1,200 paramilitary personnel to Punjab to intercept the protesters marching towards Islamabad via the GT Road.

Police reported that approximately 300 demonstrators, carrying TLP flags, posters, and banners, gathered at the crossing from Dhoke Abbasi and nearby areas. The participants chanted anti-government slogans and urged others to join the protest. When protesters blocked the GT Road and refused to disperse, police resorted to force, resulting in 90 arrests and the seizure of sound systems, although some protesters managed to evade capture. Late Saturday night, police began dismantling several road blockades, facilitating movement for commuters.
