Dengue outbreak sparks alarm in Panjgur; locals slam poor healthcare response
A recent outbreak of dengue fever in the Panjgur district has raised alarm, with reports indicating a significant number of infections among the local population, including men, women, and children, reports 24brussels.
The community, alongside political figures, is voicing serious concerns about the escalating situation, pointing to inadequate healthcare facilities and ineffective preventive measures by district health authorities. Furthermore, several individuals returning from Karachi have tested positive for the virus, which is rapidly spreading in areas like Khudabadan and Chitkan.
Residents criticize the absence of fumigation efforts and the lack of a dedicated dengue control unit, exacerbating the outbreak. A local social worker emphasized, “With a population of about one million, Panjgur lacks an effective system to fight dengue.” He further added that anti-mosquito spray initiatives have been largely symbolic, prioritizing photo opportunities over substantial action.
Rahmat Saleh Baloch, Deputy Parliamentary Leader in the Balochistan Assembly and leader of the National Party, expressed grave concern over the outbreak’s proliferation. He has urgently called on the Balochistan government, UNICEF, and the World Health Organization (WHO) to send medical teams and implement emergency measures. Baloch reported a dramatic surge in dengue cases, with infections spreading from Karachi and Hub, noting that local hospitals are lacking testing kits and specialized personnel. He warned of potential fatalities without prompt action.
Baloch urged the provincial health department to classify Panjgur as a dengue-affected district and initiate emergency protocols, which should include extensive fumigation, public awareness campaigns, and enhancements to medical facilities. Additionally, residents and civil society representatives have called on Provincial Assembly members to elevate this issue within the provincial government and advocate for the establishment of a dedicated dengue treatment unit at Panjgur Hospital.
