Earthquake of magnitude 4.1 strikes Afghanistan
An earthquake of magnitude 4.1 struck Afghanistan late Monday night, according to a statement from the National Center for Seismology (NCS), reports 24brussels.
The earthquake occurred at a depth of 180 kilometers. In a post on social media, the NCS reported the details: “EQ of M: 4.1, On: 06/10/2025 20:12:21 IST, Lat: 36.64 N, Long: 70.88 E, Depth: 180 Km, Location: Afghanistan.”
This recent event follows another earthquake of magnitude 3.9 that struck the region on September 28, which occurred at a shallow depth of 10 kilometers, increasing the risk of aftershocks. The NCS identified that earlier quake with the following details: “EQ of M: 3.9, On: 28/09/2025 04:16:13 IST, Lat: 34.62 N, Long: 70.84 E, Depth: 10 Km, Location: Afghanistan.”
Generally, shallow earthquakes are considered more dangerous than deeper ones as the seismic waves travel shorter distances to the surface, leading to stronger ground shaking and increased potential for damage and casualties.
On September 18, India’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Harish Parvathaneni, reiterated India’s commitment to fostering peace, stability, and development in Afghanistan. During a UN Security Council briefing, he highlighted India’s focus on providing humanitarian assistance and capacity-building initiatives for the Afghan population.
Ambassador Parvathaneni stressed the importance of international and regional consensus on key issues relating to Afghanistan and emphasized India’s proactive engagement with relevant parties. He reaffirmed India’s dedication to supporting the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) and expressed gratitude to Special Representative Roza Otunbayeva for her briefing.
