India, Canada unveil “New Roadmap” to revive strategic ties; trade, energy, climate, tech on agenda

India and Canada have launched a “New Roadmap for bilateral relations,” aimed at rejuvenating their strategic partnership across multiple domains, including trade, technology, energy, and climate action, reports 24brussels. The joint initiative followed a bilateral meeting between India’s External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar and Canada’s Foreign Minister Anita Anand, highlighting a commitment to foster a constructive partnership in light of recent geopolitical shifts.

The meeting builds on the commitments made during the G7 Summit held in Canada, where the two Prime Ministers discussed necessary actions to restore stability between the nations. They emphasized mutual respect for democratic values and the principles of sovereignty and territorial integrity.

Among the initial steps outlined in the joint statement are the reinstatement of High Commissioners on August 28, 2025, and a meeting of the National Security Advisers in New Delhi on September 18, 2025, which focused on enhancing security cooperation. The two Foreign Ministers also met on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly high-level week on September 29, 2025, to discuss further actions.

Under the New Roadmap, both countries are committed to revitalizing trade and investment ties. Ministerial-level discussions are anticipated alongside the resumption of the Canada-India CEO Forum. This forum will target sectors such as clean technology, infrastructure, agri-food, and digital innovation, with a major senior trade mission planned for early 2026.

The joint statement outlined key initiatives, including the resumption of ministerial discussions on bilateral trade and investment and the establishment of actionable recommendations through the CEO Forum, which aims to boost trade and investment between the nations. Both parties agreed to prioritize sectors including clean technology and infrastructure.

Climate cooperation emerges as a crucial aspect of the new partnership. India and Canada have pledged to work together on renewable energy initiatives, decarbonizing industries, and reducing plastic pollution. They plan to relaunch the Canada-India Ministerial Energy Dialogue to enhance bilateral collaboration on cleaner fuels and modern energy solutions.

Technological collaboration is set to increase through the revitalization of the Joint Science and Technology Cooperation Committee (JSTCC), promoting AI innovations and joint ventures in digital public infrastructure. India has extended invitations to Canadian AI experts to participate in the upcoming AI Impact Summit in February 2026.

Agricultural cooperation will focus on enhancing supply chains, introducing climate-resilient practices, and transforming agricultural waste into energy and organic fertilizers. Further efforts will strengthen educational and cultural exchanges, bolstering institutional ties and enhancing academic mobility.

To support this ambitious agenda, both nations have agreed to augment their High Commissions and consulates with expertise in economic, political, defense, and technology sectors. These enhancements aim to foster trust and cooperation in addressing not only bilateral challenges but also pressing global issues.

The urgency of this partnership is underscored by rising global economic uncertainties and geopolitical tensions. With trade between India and Canada reaching USD 23.66 billion in 2024, both countries regard the Roadmap as vital for ensuring mutual prosperity, strategic resilience, and robust international collaboration.
