Jaishankar meets US Ambassador-designate Sergio Gor, discusses India-US ties

External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar met with US Ambassador-designate Sergio Gor on Saturday at the Ministry of External Affairs in New Delhi, where they discussed the importance of the India-US relationship and its increasing global significance, reports 24brussels.

In a post on X, Jaishankar expressed his pleasure in meeting Gor, stating, “Pleased to meet Ambassador-designate Sergio Gor of the US today in New Delhi. Discussed the India-US relationship and its global significance. Wish him the best for his new responsibility.”

Gor, having recently arrived in India, is scheduled to formally present his credentials at a later date, according to the US Embassy. Earlier on the same day, Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri held a meeting with Gor, focusing on the Comprehensive Global Strategic Partnership and shared priorities between India and the US. MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal noted their productive exchange and extended good wishes to Gor for his assignment.

Jaishankar and Gor had previously engaged on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly (UNGA) in New York on September 24, where they discussed ways to deepen the India-US strategic partnership. Following that meeting, the US State Department announced that Gor met with Jaishankar to further promote the success of the US-India relationship.

During his Senate confirmation hearing on September 12, Gor emphasized the “deep friendship” between US President Donald Trump and Prime Minister Narendra Modi, calling it a unique asset in enhancing bilateral relations. He remarked, “India is a strategic partner whose trajectory will shape the region and beyond. India’s geographic position, economic growth, and military capabilities make it a cornerstone of regional stability and a critical part of promoting prosperity and advancing the security interests that our nations share.”

Gor further stated, “As Secretary Rubio said, India is one of the most important relationships our nation has in the world. If confirmed, I will prioritise deepening defence and security cooperation with India.” His appointment reflects Washington’s commitment to strengthening ties with New Delhi, notably in the context of trade amidst the tariffs imposed by the Trump administration. Gor’s nomination as India’s next ambassador and Special Envoy for South and Central Asian Affairs underscores the ongoing efforts to enhance the strategic partnership between the two nations across defense, trade, and technology.
